About the Work:

  • Successful applicants are allocated to different teams within NHSE or DHSC, depending on their attributes and degree specialties.
  • Work undertaken varies between the teams, however all are analytically focused. Examples include:
    • Data collection and publication,
    • Informing policy colleagues of changes to the latest data trends, by producing ministerial briefings,
    • Producing graphs and reports to gain new insights into data,
    • Modelling of the urgent and emergency care system,
    • Developing evidence-based funding formulae for the NHS,
    • Ad hoc requests from policy colleagues,
    • Answering Freedom Of Information requests from the general public,
    • Opportunities to take on diverse projects outside of the normal work of the team – these often involve working collaboratively with analysts from other teams and departments.

Training Opportunities:

  • NHSE and DHSC are committed to the personal learning and development of the workforce.
  • Placement students are given plenty of opportunities to develop their skills in analytical seminars, training courses and on-the-job training.
  • A mentor is assigned to each student, to discuss career and personal development, and help to provide training opportunities.
  • Each student has a training budget managed by their team, which covers the cost of training courses.

Extra Benefits of the Placement:

  • All placement students may be part of the Government Student Network (GSN), which provides opportunities to attend talks, conferences and social events with other civil service placement students around the country.
  • Students work within a team of analysts, but also contribute to group projects managed by the students alone. The teams of students (both within each location and joined across the three) are given a large degree of independence when working on these projects, delegating the workload themselves.
  • Working and catching up regularly with the other students not only allows placement students to share their experiences of their jobs, but also to socialise with other students outside of work.
